Rugby Success

Rathfriland High School continued their recent run of good results this week, with two age groups enjoying success. On Tuesday our U14 team took on a determined Tandragee Junior High side, who had a number of talented individuals. The score line went back and forth, with Rathfriland taking an early 17-0 lead in the opening minutes of the game. To their credit, the Tandragee side rallied, coming back strong, to take the lead with three back to back converted tries. However, the boys were not going to be denied their first victory of the season and played some excellent rugby in the closing minutes of the game, eventually coming out on top of a 31-28 score line. Man of the Match went to hat trick hero Thomas Skelly, although special mention goes to Edward Harbinson and Ethan Hillis, who got the other two tries, although well done to all involved for a well-deserved result following weeks of hard work on the training pitch.

Thursday saw our U16 team take on Lisnagarvey High School in their second Ulster Rugby South East League match. The boys continue to impress and develop their style of play, with particular credit going to the boys for the increased level of intensity and pressure they were able to exert on their opponents, who had a number of very strong ball carriers.

There were a number of excellent performances from the boys and in the end they proved to be too strong for their opponents, with the game ending 50-3 with tries from Louie McCready, Adam Truesdale, Sam Macauley, Alfie McConville, Ryan McMurray x 2, Stephen Porter and Alexander Corbett. With conversions from Frazer Shilliday x 5 and Joel Johnston.

Man of the Match goes to Stephen Porter, who continues to impress in terms of both defence and attack, however again there were a number of candidates for this and we would like to congratulate all involved for their continued efforts.
